Top 10 List - The Second Time Around 5/2/2001

#1) Who Is It? - It took all season, but finally Jake knocks first before entering. And he makes sure everyone notes this, by asking everyone if they noticed. Yes, we did. Thanks.

#2) Outside Support - Lily is suddenly able to see her dad, Phil, as he appears to her several times. First he tells her to “ask Jake what has been lost.” Although he tries to avoid her, Jake finally admits that he’s going to lose “Phil’s,” as the bank is taking everything in foreclosure. Phil continues to appear at various times, strengthening Lily emotionally. Rick also seemed to sense his presence, although Barbara and Judy never did.

#3) The Last Stand - Karen tries to show her support for Rick & Lily’s upcoming nuptials. She suggests that Jessie prepare to sing a song for them. Later, when she’s told that the wedding is off, she absorbs this news with cautious hope. Within a few hours, however, Jessie calls her back to say that they will marry “any minute.” Karen slowly hangs up the phone, and leans against the window frame, defeated. A lone tear rolls down her cheek.

#4) Pink Poison - Grace tries to console the broken-hearted Eli by letting him know Carla’s okay. Unfortunately, Carla had mailed a letter to Grace, in which she stated that she didn’t miss Eli at all. Grace lies to him, to protect his feelings, but Eli ends up finding the letter in her room, and is crushed. During this emotional roller coaster, Eli and Grace almost kiss, but Jessie bursts in to announce “The wedding’s off.”

#5) 1 is the Loneliest Number - Judy tells Lily how she is impressed by her ability to accept Rick with all his flaws. Judy: “I use their flaws as a way to move on.” Lily tells Judy how she’s never been alone, and never been without a man. Just as Judy was about to take offense, Lily said, “I think you are really brave.” Judy smiled at her sister’s high praise. -- Lily finds Grace crying. At first, ‘The Mom’ is worried her daughter is hurting because of her imminent marriage. Instead, Grace says “I’m all alone. Do you even realize that? Do you even know what that is like?!” Lily takes a moment to respond, and replies “No, honey, I don’t…. I’ve always been too afraid to find out what that feels like. I’m so glad that you’re not.” The look exchanged between mother and daughter forged a bond of love so strong… of understanding, of compassion, of peace.

#6) Dual-Support System - Arnold, Rick’s accountant, recommends that Rick have “less wedding,” as his assets are dwindling . Rick can’t do that to Lily. She “has supported him through everything, as if it was normal. She deserves more than a City Hall wedding.” -- Judy suggests to Lily that they call it off, since Phil’s is closing, and money is getting tight. Lily: “I must do this. When Rick gave me the ring, I didn’t answer him. And now, the public [Atlantor] humiliation. He needs me to make a big deal, even if it’s just for show. He needs the show.” Later, reality set in for the bride and groom, and they agree that they were both afraid that if they “didn’t go all out,” they would hurt each other’s feelings. Using brevity, they cancel the reception.

#7) Radiance Unchecked - Sela Ward has the amazing ability to literally glow with beauty, as is needed. As the wedding approached, you could see this take place. It becomes especially notable when she sits down to talk to Grace about feelings of loneliness. As she read from the book “Weddings for Complicated Families,” even in black and white, she captured that ‘look’. And during her wedding, under the billowy fabric of parachute material, she radiated. It must be her ability to truly find peace and joy, and extend that deep-seated happiness to those around her.

#8) Hidden Talents - Will continues to surprise people around him. He is a Dad. He has been searching for his daughter for the past 3 years, who was put up for adoption when he and his girlfriend were 16. This could be the avenue the writers will use to give him a reasonable exit from the show. Also, he’s an ordained minister, which becomes very useful in the 12 Minute Marriage.* And his creative flair was utilized in this episode to make a lovely setting, with parachutes, for the season’s conclusion - Rick and Lily finally get married. Also, Judy’s interest in Will is piqued, and they do share a moment or two.

*The final 12 minutes of this episode, the entire marriage is organized and completed.

#9) Mirror, Mirror - Throughout the episode, Zoe has been desperately seeking her little hand mirror. It is important for her to make sure that her appearance looks good, even from the back. Jake is unable to assist her, and it turns out that Rick finds it, in the freezer. Phil moves it up high, and Zoe becomes more and more frustrated. Her body may still be small, but her mind is active, and she declares that she doesn’t want to be told that “nothing is going to change.” Rick locates the hand mirror, and then tells her that “everything is going to change.” Zoe knows this, and hugs him. Not so much out of love, but more out of a mutual understanding, something she was looking for the whole time.

#10) I do. I do, too. - While Rick and Lily look at what was to be, and feel slightly dazed, they have a meeting of the minds. After all, Rick is able to discuss Churchill while standing under a parachute. This makes her want to marry him even more. It’s too late to call Dial-A-Clergyman, but Will is available, and on site! Rick quickly has Arnold fax him the vows in Hebrew, and Barbara arrives in a nick of time. She quickly changes and awaits Lily in the garden, under the canopy. Eli did get the gig, and plays The Wedding March, acoustically. Zoe enters, casting flower petals on the aisle, Jessie following close behind. Grace and Lily enter, and Rick smiles upon his bride-to-be. Lily sees her mother, and is overjoyed. Regaining her composure, she quickly approaches Rick, and Rick begins his vows. Lily locks her eyes up her man, and as the ceremony quickly concludes, many teary eyes are visible. Everyone knows that everything is about to change, and it is a bittersweet joy as they know they are about to embark on a whole new way of life for all of them. Rick and Lily raise their glasses of champagne to one another, as Jessie begins to sing “Red Red Robin” to them. Smiles erupt, dancing ensues, and pictures are taken as they pose together, a merged family.
