#1) Love Never Fails (1 Cor 13:8a) - Lily silently cries as her fiancé finally opens up and reveals his fears, his pain and his thoughts. When his despair almost takes him too far, she says: "Stop. Look at me. I'm not going to go away. I'm not going to do that. I don't care about your business, I don't care about your reputation. I don't care about any of that. It doesn't matter to me, do you understand that it doesn't matter? [I'm gonna go] No, you sit down because I'm not finished. Rick, I love you. Can you see that? I...I love you. I love what's weak about you. And what's strong about you. It's all the same to me, because it's you. Can you understand that nothing you do or say can ever change that? Can you believe that? Can you let me love you like that? God.. Let me love you like that." Rick falls into her arms, sobbing her name. Their love for one another has truly been there, each and every time they needed it most. Thus the title.
#2) What About Bob? - D.A. Bob has shown an interest in Karen since AP1. In this episode, he fumbles with the right choice of words as he tries to breach her defenses. Karen won't be toyed with: "So you can trick me into revealing more about my ex-husband?" "I was trying to do my job, Karen." "So were the marshals that tore up Rick's apt while my children were there." Guardedly efficient, Karen leaves, as he winces at his own lack of Rickness.
#3) Wolfette In Sheep's Clothing - Amanda revealed her interest in Rick, when they are finally left alone at the bar. Initially she asks about his immanent marriage, but soon indicates she has more interest in him than choosing place settings or flower arrangements.
#4) Check Those Ratings - After Rick appears on Mason Gould's "The Conscience of Chicago," he leaves in a fury. Mason sabotaged Rick on camera, and all he could think of was who watches that show. Lily quickly stated firmly, "Nobody I know." Shortly thereafter, Karen stated "No-one watches those shows." So until the Neilsens are published, we won't know what type of damage that show caused Sammler Asso.
#5) And In This Corner.. - Rick unleashes his ardor upon Karen, even after she gives him the good news that he will not be indicted. "I still hate you for what you did to me." Slowly nodding, Karen replies "Well, I'm sorry you feel that way," and leaves. Their divorce is final now. Dr Zwick would be proud.
#6) Filing Chapter 13? - After Rick informs Lily of his good fortune, a news report about Atlantor suspending the project indefinitely quickly cause Rick to suffer a panic attack. His partnership ruined, his clients went with David, his 1.5 years of work on this project are down the drain, and he has nothing to show for it. He runs up the steps, two at a time.
#7) Calm Before The Storm - Karen and Judy are talking at Booklovers about Bob's potential. "It's so peaceful here." Judy's "Yeah, kind of a monastic feel" was barely out of her mouth as a fuming Lily pours into the store. Karen, caught between a bookcase and an exit, tries to sit this one out, but soon the conversation between Lily and Judy leans her way. Karen shows herself, and although it appears she intended to say one thing, she quickly decides mildness is more appropriate. Lily could have use a b&w to state how she felt about Judy & Karen's friendship, but I think we pretty much figured it out anyway.
#8) You Gotta Give Him Credit for Tenacity - Bob continues his quest for Karen, at the Upton Sinclair reception. He even utilized his introductory speech for the keynote speaker as a forum to appeal to her: "[He] always makes the right decision, leaving the rest of us to trip over our feet of clay..... Simply doing the right thing can sometimes be a heroic accomplishment....I wish I had that kind of courage." This time it worked, as they kissed briefly in an alcove. Later after she refutes this act, stating that they have a conflict of interest due to the civil case, he leaves her with this thought: "You are the most beautiful, smartest, most intense sexiest woman I have ever encountered in my entire life." A kiss, another one far more passionate, and finally he turns and walks away. Rick saw this, btw.
#9) A Parting Of The Ways - Rick confronts Miles, apparently on his deathbed. "You ruined my reputation, you ruined my business, while you were sabotaging the project right under my nose..You destroyed me Miles." Miles' less-than-usual enigmatic reply: "Were you blind, were you greedy? Was your ambition greater than your good sense? Were you still a boy sent to do a man's work? You will have years to answer those questions. As for me I'm tired, and I choose not to spend another moment in contemplation of the past." This parting had dual-meaning for Rick, who wasn't able to say goodbye to his father before he died. He left a bronze turtle with Miles, effectively breaking any ties with this man forever.
#10) A Surprising Source - As Lily reels from her heated discussion with an inebriated Rick the previous night, Judy comes over to check on her. After a little playful banter (" I told you so!"), she surprised Lily with "If you guys can get through this, you might even be able to survive marriage." "[Judy] you sounds like you are saying I should just hang in there with him." "Hmmm. I guess I am" finishes a smiling Judy.
