Katie compiled these extras from the scripts
Excerpts taken from the script "Gardenia"
Note from Katie: Everything in parenthesis does not appear on the script, it is just my description so you all know what part of the script I'm talking about.
Gardenia was actually called Gardenia2 in the first draft and here are the parts in the script that explains why:
(This is the scene in front of Jessies locker when Katie gives Jessie the Billie Holiday CD and explains to her who Billie Holiday was)
JESSIE: (reading the title) Lady Day...
Katie: That's what they called her. And she always wore a white Gardenia in her hair... So that's my screen name. GARDENIA
JESSIE: (deflating slightly) Well, that's better than JESTER123.
KATIE: I like yours. Well, I gotta go.
JESSIE: Me too. Thanks for this!
(Now this is the scene in the attic where Jessie is getting ready to see Karen and Zoe comes in and makes the comment about how the blouse is so not Jessie. Anyway, in the showed that aired, Zoe's line about hating all Grace's tops ends the scene. Here's what got cut out.)
Jessie sees Zoe has a small white box.
JESSIE: What's that?
ZOE: I almost forgot! This came for you.
Zoe hands her the box. Jessie opens it, and we take in her reaction before we actually see what's inside.
ZOE: What kind of flower is that?
JESSIE: A gardenia.
(Now, Zoe has left and Jessie goes to her computer, the following is the description in the script that follows)
[TAP. TAP. ENTER. A SCREEN COMES UP:] "CHANGE YOUR SCREEN NAME." Jessie has typed in "JESTER123." Under CHANGE TO she types in "GARDENIA." A warning instantly pops up: "SCREEN-NAME ALREADY IN USE." So Jessie adds a two. And the Screen says-- "WELCOME, GARDENIA2."
(Thus, the title <g>)
(Now the following scene, I'm pretty sure was filmed because I remember seeing a picture of it on ABC. This is when LILY visits KAREN. The scene takes place after JESSIE goes back to the department store to buy the blouse that Karen liked)
INT. HOSPITAL -- KAREN's ROOM -- DAY
Flower's everywhere. Judy sits with a resting Karen. Lily appears at the door. Judy gets up, gets her bag.
LILY: Don't go.
JUDY: It's fine, I need some air. (gently) Lily's here, Kar.
Karen's cloudy but present. Lily's awkward at first.
KAREN: Hi.
LILY: Hi. Is it okay for me to be here? I know it's not visiting hours.
KAREN: It's okay. Till they catch you.
LILY: I won't stay long.
KAREN: It's all right. Really.
A brief pause. Lily looks around.
LILY: All these flowers!
KAREN: Take some. Please -- !
LILY: I couldn't --
KAREN: It would help, they just keep coming --
LILY: (getting to the point) Karen? She's safe with me. I want you to know that.
KAREN: Great. Let her hate you for awhile. I need to rest.
LILY: You can count on me. I'm highly hateful. Just ask Grace!
KAREN: That's good to know.
LILY: Karen -- you've done a wonderful job with he.
KAREN: Oh, I don't know. Sometimes all I've done is hurt her.
LILY: Me, too. With our own, we just see how we've failed.
A NURSE is at the door.
LILY: I should go.
KAREN: That's too bad. I was just to offer you some KOOL-AID...Lily?
LILY: Yes?
KAREN: Take the roses. They're about to bloom.
So Lily does.
LILY: Thank you.
KAREN: So she's okay, you think?
Lily stops, considers whether to go on. She does.
LILY: I think--there might be a boy.
KAREN: Really?
LILY: You know how sometimes you just sort of see it?
KAREN: YEs.
LILY: I just-- saw it. See if you do.
The nurse wants her out. Lily raises a hand in farewell.
LILY: Bye.
(This next scene doesn't directly follow the Lily/Karen scene nor are there many changes but I thought it was worth mentionin because of something Karen says.)
Dissolve to: JESSIE's GARDENIA
And from that we find Karen, who's been sleeping. Her eyes open; she sees Rick. She tries to get oriented.
KAREN: (re: the gardenia) That's Jessie's. Will you take it to her?
RICK: Sure.
KAREN: How long have I been sleeping?
A pause, then --
RICK: A long time.
KAREN: Where are the kids?
RICK: At home. It's just me.
A pause.
KAREN: I like her, Rick. I like Lily.
RICK: Thank you Karen. I'm glad.
(the rest of the scene pretty much unfolds the way we saw it on screen.)
(This scene takes place right after Eli picks up Jessie from Karen's when he says "go to hell".)
INT. LILY AND RICK's HOUSE -- NIGHT
Grace and Zoe are playing a board game and actually being nice to each other for nine seconds. As Zoe does something that makes Grace laugh we discover this is seen from Jessie's POV. Grace looks up and sees Jessie, watching from the hall.
GRACE: Hey! Jess! Come on in!
JESSIE: It's okay, I don't want to bother you guys.
ZOE: You're not. Grace is just cheating.
GRACE: (administering a noogie) I AM NOT!
ZOE: (laughing) You are!!
GRACE: Come play.
She shrugs, shyly joins them, sits on the floor.
ZOE: You know how to play this?
Jessie nods. They play the game (to be chosen) for a moment or two. Then, very quietly, Jessie starts to cry. Grace and Zoe see this, look at each other, patiently wait for Jessie to share as much as she feels like sharing. A beat.
JESSIE: My mom's so sad.
ZOE: Our mom was sad. When our dad left.
GRACE: I'd watch her, when she didn't know? And she made me think of a doll with the stuffing all pulled out.
JESSIE: Yeah. It's sort of like that.
ZOE: I get sad.
GRACE: So do I.
ZOE: Women do.
They all laugh, and it really helps.
JESSIE: You know something Grace?
GRACE: What?
JESSIE: You are cheating!
Merriment, denials, girlpunching --and all secretly seen by Rick from the hallway.
Excerpts taken from the script "Falling In Place"
(This scene takes place after Lily tells Jessie that she bought the vanilla icing cookies for Karen and Jessie tells her that they are the worng cookies.)
Jessie exits as Rick enters.
LILY: But Jessie --
But she's gone.
RICK: What's --?
LILY: I'm a bad stepmother. I got the wrong cookies for Karen.
RICK: I'll eat 'em.
LILIY: Thanks.
Post-shower, Eli in a robe, crosses through the kitchen on his way out to the garage.
ELI: (re: the cookies) Are these for anyone?
LILY: They're for you.
ELI: Cool.
He takes the whole box.
RICK: What time did you have to be at Judy's?
ELI: She didn't set a time. She just said to come by.
RICK: Well, it wouldn't hurt to be there when they open.
ELI: I'm only helping out for a couple days.
LILY: What's she gonna have you do?
ELI: I don't know. Put books on shelves.
LILY: Oh. Well, that's...
Devolving into an awkward beat.
ELI: So anyway...
Eli turns to leave.
RICK: E?
ELI: Yeah?
Rick: Good luck.
ELI: thanks.
(This scene takes place after Jessie and Katie decide to ditch school and go to Jessie's house instead.)
CUT TO:
INT. KAREN'S HOSPITAL ROOM -- CONTINUOUS
Judy walks down the hall towards Karen's room, carrying a grocery bag. Just before she gest to Karen's room, she drops one of her gloves. She bends down to pick it up. From out of KAREN's room comes JEANNINE. They don't know each other but there's something in the air and they look at each other as they pass. Judy stops a moment before she goes in and looks down and hall after Jeannine.
INT. KAREN'S HOSPITAL ROOM -- CONTINUOUS
Judy enters, a little timidly.
JUDY: Hi...
KAREN: (thrown)Oh..Judy...Hi...
JUDY: Hi.
Judy sits down.
JUDY:Was that...?
KAREN: That was Jeannine.
JUDY: I had a feeling. (Then) I brought you some snackie things.
KAREN: Thanks. That's sweet. Oh, and thank you so much for hiring
Eli. That was wonderful. I know it's only for a few days, but...
JUDY: Well, who knows? It could be longer. It seems to be working out.
KAREN: Oh, really? that's great...
JUDY: Yeah. (an awkward beat, then) Listen, Karen... There's something -- I've been wanting to -- We never really talked about what happened with Sam and Jeannine. And me. I mean we did. But not really --
KAREN: Judy it's okay. I feel we've moved past it. It's honestly okay.
JUDY: really?
KAREN's Interview
Everybody feels terrible because I'm...in this position. I see it on their faces. And yet somehow I find myself trying to make them feel better.
BACK TO KAREN'S HOSPITAL
JUDY: Well I'm glad. And relieved.
KAREN: Good.
JUDY: So, what did Jeannine bring you?
KAREN: She brought me those.
Karen indicates the most beautiful flower arrangement in the world.
JUDY: They're beautiful.
KAREN: You know, I've actually been hoping, this will sound silly, but I've been kind of wishing that Leo would visit me. He must know I'm here. I mean, he makes rounds...
JUDY: he might not know. Do you want me to call him?
KAREN: No...
A knock at the door.
JUDY: Maybe that's him now...R
KAREN: Stop it.
JUDY: Come in!
The door opens. It's LLOYD LLOYD. He carries a gift.
LLOYD: Hi...
KAREN: (completely surprised) Lloyd. Hi.
LLOYD: I heard what happened, Karen. I'm so sorry. How are you?
KAREN: I'm--I'm so surprised to see you. Do you know Judy?
LLOYD: Of course. Madame Booklover.
JUDY: Of course! You were dating my friend Debra. Are you guys still...?
LLOYD: No. We're not.
JUDY: Well, then come back to Booklovers.
LLOYD: I just might.
JUDY: So anyway, I should get back myself. I'll leave you two...Bye, honey.
Judy leaves Karen and quickly leaves.
KAREN: Bye.
LLOYD: See ya. (then back to Karen, sits) So...Hi.
Karen smiles.
LLOYD: (handing her the gift) Oh. I brought you something.
KAREN: (Taking it, opening it.) Lloyd... You didn't have to...
It's an elegant journal and pen.
KAREN: Thank you. It's...
LLOYD: It's a journal. i know it might seem a little weird, but, I remember when I broke my back in law school -- it was an odd and kind of --life changing experience -- in a way -- And I always wished I'd kept a journal. So...
KAREN: (touched) That's really so thoughtful. Thank you, Lloyd.
LLOYD: Well, I'm just glad you're okay.
We stay with them a moment...
(Whew, that was long. Okay now, here's Jessie's therapy session with the good Dr. Rosenfeld. I think this part explains why Jessie just about exploded at Lily in the attic.)
Jessie isn't very talkative. Dr. Rosenfeld looks at her.
DR. ROSENFELD: So, are you still mad at your brother?
JESSIE: yeah. He's not -- He's just not helping. With anything. He's like in his own world of... weirdness.
DR. R: I thought you had dibs on that world.
JESSIE: Ha. ha. (then) It just seems like, he doesn't feel bad for my mom or anything. He doesn't even feel guilty.
DR.R: I don't understand. Why would he feel guilty. Is the accident his fault?
JESSIE: No. But he could have been -- he could be more --
DR. R: More what?
JESSIE: I don't know. It just seems like nobody cares about what's happening.
DR. R: Who's nobody.
JESSIE: Everybody. I mean, sure, people act like it but you know they're just doing it because they have to. Because she had this accident.
DR. R: And what if there was no accident?
JESSIE: She'd still be alone and no one would care.
DR. R: You seem like you care.
JESSIE: But I feel I'm the only one.
DR. R: That's a lot of pressure.
JESSIE: i just want her to get better. And I don't want her to be in any pain.
DR. R: You want her back. (she doesn't say anything) So, did you start school again?
JESSIE: Yeah, everyone there is like, so, depressing. Except Katie, she makes me laugh.
DR. R: So, that's good.
JESSIE: Yeah.
